Aren't those logocontest websites and 99designs notorious for having stolen designs entered into their website? I'm not sure I'd want to support a site that encourages cheap knock-offs of other peoples work. I would steer clear of those and if you are serious about your work, I would steer clear of submitting anything to them.
I want to comment to Heather's response above.
There are some credible companies out there that do offer contests who are genuine and do not exploit the applicants work.
Some will encourage students and professionals to show their work and not create something for the heck not it(usually by submitting a site or logo they have done for a client). Contests are also a great way to get the word out about yourself, and your services/skills(and possibly get leads for a contract in the future). It is a win win solution.
I am speaking personally for Sitemasher, that is.
cheers

Thanks for this nice post.
And btw., next time link thumbnails to their corresponding destination.
Sorry but 99designs is not for "savvy" clients--it's for people who want something dirt cheap and don't wish to pay for professionals who will actually collaborate with them to achieve their marketing/communication objectives. The true "risk" is not from paying a professional, it is from entrusting your company's brand to a contest of desperate, inexperienced people who can maybe make a pretty picture but are not going to be strategic business partners with you, which is what PROFESSIONAL designers are.
Pleae call a pig a pig, not try to turn it into a thoroughbred horse.
Thanks for acknowledging DesignBay!
Web designers can also use DesignBay to submit quotes and find new clients. We have a lot of web design customers who are simply requesting quotes via DesignBay.
Designers: come join DesignBay - it's free!
I belive www.crowdspring.com to be a cut abve the rest when it comes to design contests.
What about www.voteforart.com -- they just launched and host contests for major universities- where the winning design is printed on t-shirts and sold at the university bookstorre
Thanks for the great post, but I think the first in the list should be DesignContest.net ;)
